Monday Morning Box Office Report: SpongeBob Soaks Up Some Serious Simoleons

Just as the American Sniper craze finally showed signs of slowing down, another surprise hit stormed the box office over the weekend. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water debuted to $56 million, an astounding 75% improvement on the original SpongeBob SquarePants flick, knocking American Sniper down to second place. That’s one of the best February starts ever and it’s even crazier when you consider that the previous film came out over a decade ago. Granted, the lack of strong competition probably helped since both Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son were big disappointments, the former earning just $19 million on a reported budget of $175 million and the latter taking in a measly $7 million. Paddington rounded out the top 5.

1. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water — $56M
2. American Sniper — $24.17M
3. Jupiter Ascending — $19M
4. Seventh Son — $7.10M
5. Paddington — $5.37M
6. Project Almanac — $5.33M
7. The Imitation Game — $4.88M
8. The Wedding Ringer — $4.80M
9. Black or White — $4.52M
10. The Boy Next Door — $4.10M

I can’t believe after The Wachowski’s extremely spotty record that they got handed 175 million dollars to make Jupiter Ascending.

The Wachowski’s got 175 million for Jupiter??? Man how the hell did they raise that amount with their current track record??!!! I mean I think they are talented for sure but they really haven’t made a cinematic/financial impact since The Matrix!

I just wonder how they keep getting handed money to make movies, period. I like their films, and like that they take chances, but how many flops does one have to have before they cut off your funding? It almost seems as if once you’re in the Hollywood system, you can keep making films, regardless of their bankability.
