Poltergeist Remake Trailer Starring Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt

poltergeist2015

After years of rumours, when it was finally announced that Sam Raimi was producing a Poltergeist remake with Gil Kenan (Monster House) directing, it seemed like the project might actually be in pretty good hands. However, recent comments by Sam Rockwell about it being “more of a kids’ movie” and an “adventure” had left some people feeling a bit worried. Now this week the first trailer has arrived online and it mostly just feels like every other horror movie trailer being released these days.

Obviously this is an updated take on the Steven Spielberg-produced Tobe Hooper-directed 1982 film, and while there is some familiar imagery here, the CG effects are also attempting to take things to the next level. Personally, I think my biggest complaint is that Jared Harris is a pretty poor substitute for Zelda Rubinstein, but I’m still willing to give this a shot. Poltergeist hits theatres on July 24th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

what, no curved television? missing a lot of big opportunities there.

I wanted to give this a chance…. the kids touching the closet door handle for the static charge for example…. That almost made me think the movie had a shot to capture a bit of the magic/wonder of the original. That and the part about ‘It knows what scares you.’ which echoes the original trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ytjaMfoF2M).

I’m sorry though everything else looks…. just bad. In the most bland, derivative CGI-filled way possible. Something between every possession movie and every Paranormal Activity movie made in the last 10 years.

You’re a lot more forgiving than I am, Sean. I have not a single interest in seeing this now.

The first thing I told my daughter when she was old enough to walk is to never touch the t.v. screen.
The old tube t.v.s you could just spray with Windex and wipe with a paper towel, but cleaning HD sets is a pain in the ass.
On that basis I can’t sympathize with this family I’m sorry to say.
Other than that I’m surprised they seem to keep a lot of the original set pieces and the house looks very similar.
That clown can’t touch the ’82 version though.

    Word to that.

I never understand these remakes that literally are only re-shooting the original footage shot-for-shot with modern actors. What’s the point? And although I like Jared Harris I have to agree with Sean, he’s a pretty poor substitute for Zelda Rubinstein.
    Verdict: Not interested.

You said it all when you said it looks like every other horror movie. The original is at least one of my top 20 films of all times and I feel like it worked because it was filmed more in the style of an ET or Close Encounters…and that’s what scared the crap out of me all those years ago. They were real people living in the real world. This looks set in the horror universe, with stupid unoriginal music…why not use the original score in the trailer at least. That said…I guess I’ll see it at some stage.

Plus, no modern TV is scan-line/interlaced in the way it is shot in this trailer. That stupid kind of laziness is a tip on how this remake will probably go down.

well I thought it looked good…
especially the clown doll, that looked creepy when it jumped at the kid, and when the dad thought it was Carol Anne in the corner, but it was a “faceless” ghost

We already have a Poltergeist remake. It’s called Insidious.

Watching THAT trailer again made me want to travel back in time and see this in the theater for the first time with a whole crowd people not knowing what they’re in for.
