Like most children of the ’80s, I grew up watching G.I. Joe and Transformers, but by far my favourite toy line and cartoon of the era was essentially a combination of both. M.A.S.K., which stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand (yes, with a K), featured a team of operatives who wore high-tech masks that granted them special abilities and drove vehicles that could transform. Up until now, it was one of the few major ’80s cartoons that had remained clear of a potential big screen adaptation, but this week we are hearing that M.A.S.K. might be making an appearance in Paramount’s next G.I. Joe movie. But what are the odds this could actually happen?
According to Film Divider, G.I. Joe 3 will likely add several new characters to the mix. Sources say that the villains this time around might be Tomax and Xamot, the Crimson Twins who finish each other’s sentences and feel each other’s pain. However, the Joes will have a new ally to rely on as well: Matt Trakker, better known as the leader of M.A.S.K.
It would seem that for the moment Matt Trakker is the only M.A.S.K. agent planned for inclusion, perhaps leaving the possibility open for a spin-off. It makes a certain amount of sense considering that they did release a Matt Trakker G.I. Joe figure a few years ago. However, it also reminds me of the rumours that Action Man was going to appear in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra in order to attract more international moviegoers, which didn’t actually happen. Indeed, M.A.S.K. was also a much bigger deal overseas and probably would not generate as much excitement in the U.S. Either way, I am definitely intrigued. Would you like to see some M.A.S.K. in your G.I. Joe or is this a terrible idea?
