Game of Thrones fans who are heading to IMAX theatres this weekend to see the last two season 4 episodes on the big screen are also being treated to the first full trailer for season 5 of the show. But after a bootleg version of the trailer leaked online earlier today, HBO has decided to release a proper HD version online as well. As per usual there’s a lot of vague talk about major conflicts coming to a head. Now everyone who has read the books can start gloating about how the rest of us have no idea what we’re in for. Game of Thrones Season 5 premieres on April 12th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

    I didn’t mean to offend you. I’m just not used to hearing GoT-readers talk so highly about the fourth (and to a degree the fifth) book. It’s notorious for being the most boring and “filler-type” book, with more relationship drama and less actual events. From what I’ve heard, however, the parts with Oberyn’s brother, and the ones with the Iron Islands, are interesting.

  • When writing the books GRRM split the characters between the fourth and the fifth book, so some is only in the fourth and some only the fifth. I guess some people don’t like that, since they would have had to wait, in some cases, 11 years to find out what happened to their favourite character.

    The TV show will no longer follow the order of the books, but rather pick events from both books. So I imagine that watching the TV show will be quite different.

    Wasn’t it supposed to be only one book, but his publisher rushed him and convinced him into splitting it into two parts and adding filler in both of them, so as to make more money?

    I personally hope that they try sticking to two seasons for both of those books. And that is mainly because I don’t want them to catch up to Martin before he finishes his next book (which I am hoping will make two seasons — as the last two books are rumored to be huge).

    But then again, a good/bad book doesn’t necessarily make for the equivalent adaption, as we have seen with the Harry Potter-books. I’m still a bit worried about Benioff and Weiss adding more of their own personal “touch” in the upcoming season, as I don’t find either of them to be particularly good writers. I haven’t even read the books myself, but can still notice whenever the writing is taken directly from Martin or Benioff and Weiss.

    “It was my feeling … that we were better off telling all the story for half the characters, rather than half the story for all the characters. Cutting the novel in half would have produced two half-novels; our approach will produce two novels taking place simultaneously, but set hundreds or even thousands of miles apart, and involving different casts of characters (with some overlap).”

    As far as I’ve understood it, Benioff and Weiss have said that they see it as adapting a complete story and not a series of books. So they will no longer stick to events from one single book but rather put together what makes the best TV season. This season, for example, will feature plot elements from book 4 & 5.

    Game of Thrones will return to US screens on Sunday, 12 April, HBO has announced. The highly anticipated season 5 will debut at 9pm in the States.

    Sky has also confirmed to Pocket-lint that it plans to show the episode on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV the following evening at 9pm UK time.
