All-Female Ghostbusters Cast Announced

Update: Hitfix is also reporting that they are courting Bill Murray to play the Walter Peck role (played by William Atherton in the original film).

Get used to it, folks… the all-female Ghostbusters reboot is indeed happening and now we have a full cast to prove it. Sony Pictures and director Paul Feig have just unveiled the four leads for the upcoming film and if all goes according to plan it will be a Bridesmaids reunion of sorts. As previously suspected, Melissa McCarthy will be starring in her fourth film for Feig, but now we have learned that Kristen Wiig is also in talks to join the cast. Rounding out the quartet will be two current SNL cast members: Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. Feig made the announcement via Twitter earlier today:

Although the negotiations are still ongoing, it is expected that all four will sign on for the film which starts production in New York sometime this summer. A-list actresses Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence were previously rumoured to have been in discussions for the film but clearly they have instead opted for comedians across the board. Not much is known about the plot but Katie Dippold (The Heat, Parks and Recreation) is penning the script while Ivan Reitman is still on board as producer. Are you excited to see the all-female Ghostbusters become a reality?

  • LordAwesome

    No.

    Just no.

  • Strybeck

    Which one’s Egon?

  • Mister Munster

Male, female, bird, fish–whatever. Give me some Ghostbusters already! And above all, make it FUN.

  • devolutionary

More importantly, who’s gonna play the female Slimer?

  • FDB

I like all of the choices except for McCarthy. She needs to go away, like immediately.

  • T. Heilman

Kind of sad to compare the comedic talent level of 1984 to that of 2015. None of these actors have the cache or style of the original crew.

S.N.L. hasn’t been relevant since the early 00’s, Feig sucks…

I cannot wait to see how America reacts to McCarthy’s comedic performance when she isn’t allowed to drop any f-bombs, presuming this is PG-13.

I hope Murray takes the high road and passes this cash-grab by.

  • Jake

America already loves McCarthy’s non R-rated comedic performance, Mike & Molly is still on TV.

  • Jake

They are not playing the characters from the original film.

  • Deven Science

Leslie Jones is always funny on SNL.

  • pcch7

They should have thrown money at Emma Stone. Now my interest has cooled significantly.

  • devolutionary

I enjoyed her non R-rated ‘quirky’ performances in Gilmore Girls, and that was a hit. Yes, once upon a time I actually watched that show.

  • T. Heilman

    Well no accounting for taste.
Regardless, she’s about as funny as cancer.

  • Damon Titus

This is literally how I imagine hell to be.

  • ChrisJPN

Agreed. I’ve been to funnier children’s funerals than Tammy.

  • pcch7

The show was good, I wouldn’t necessarily say she was that good in it though.

  • Colin

This is like when the Three Stooges movie went from Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, and Jim Carrey to three jokers no one had ever heard of outside of MADtv.

Does this mean that we can expect non-stop Ghostbreasters news from here until eternity?

  • Bandit Manatee

I have a feeling this movie will be terrible but no one is going to have the guts to say it due to the all female cast element. I mean that in of itself is not a bad thing, but let’s face it, the years of speculation and excitement for a new ghostbusters movie was not for this…

  • Len F.

Kristen Wiig is amazing, so I will watch her in anything. Do not have high hopes for this overall though.

  • ProjectGenesis

This was Sony’s only plausible play without Murray, Reitman or Ramis. Wipe the slate clean, give the PC/Twitter crowd something to talk about, etc. I just hope there’s a good story in there, and not McCarthy telling us a million different ways how she’s gonna shove that proton pack so far up someone’s butt.

With this cast it could be funny but face it, Ghostbusters wasn’t about the script or the direction, it was about those original actors in those roles. They’re obviously too old (or, regrettably, dead) to pull it off the anti-authority vibe of the original, but I would probably just rather see this new cast in a haunted house comedy without trying to recreate forty year old magic tagged with a name for marketing. On the other hand, “Krull 2″………

  • Jason Martynowski

    Racist.

  • Captain Morgan

    Well, that’s that franchise over.

  • 9No

I love Kate Mckinnon! By far the funniest cast member, who shines whenever she gets the chance. I really like the unexpected casting of these two, hope they bring it.
