Monday Morning Box Office Report: American Sniper Continues to Shock and Awe

boxofficeamericansniper2

It was another amazing weekend for Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper as the Oscar-nominated film earned an additional $64 million. That is the eighth best second weekend on record and if this pace keeps up, it could actually become the highest-grossing movie of 2014. That is just insane. In second place, the Jennifer Lopez thriller The Boy Next Door earned $15 million followed by Paddington, which continues to bring in a steady stream of family audiences. The Wedding Ringer and Taken 3 rounded out the top 5. Meanwhile the George Lucas-produced animated film Strange Magic and Mortdecai starring Johnny Depp both had disastrous openings, the former being one of the worst debuts ever for a movie playing on over 3000 screens. For the most part, January is certainly living up to its reputation for lacklustre films.

1. American Sniper — $64.37M
2. The Boy Next Door — $15M
3. Paddington — $12.39M
4. The Wedding Ringer — $11.6M
5. Taken 3 — $7.6M
6. The Imitation Game — $7.14M
7. Strange Magic — $5.53M
8. Selma — $5.5M
9. Mortdecai — $4.13M
10. Into the Woods — $3.89M

I hope the box-office results for American Sniper mean that more 80+ year old directors will get hired.

    Too right Reed. Too right.

Good! Strange Magic looks awful, and George Lucas needs to be sent the message that he’s no longer the story generating god he once was.
