Supergirl TV Series Gets Whiplash Actress

Last year we heard that CBS had given a series commitment to a Supergirl TV series from producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash). The show would, of course, revolve around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, but up until now we didn’t know who would be playing her. Now this week the network has announced that 26-year-old actress Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee) has landed the lead role, beating out Claire Holt (The Vampire Diaries) and Elizabeth Lail (Once Upon a Time). The logline for the upcoming series is as follows:

“Kara Zor-El escaped her home planet of Krypton amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she has concealed the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now, at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.”

Supergirl has previously been played by Laura Vandervoort on Smallville and Helen Slater in the 1984 feature film. This time around studio execs reportedly wanted her to be more of an “everywoman”, whatever that means. Either way, the only thing anyone seems to care about is whether or not the show will eventually crossover with both Arrow and The Flash. Since The CW is co-owned by CBS, it remains a distinct possibility. Do you think Melissa Benoist is a good choice to play Supergirl?

    I was available. Just saying.

Visually Elizabeth Lail looks the part – maybe Benoist has the greater acting chops.
