X-Files Reboot in Development, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to Potentially Return

As the second season of The Fall arrives on Netflix in the U.S., rumours are continuing to swirl this week about Gillian Anderson possibly returning to the TV show that started her career. The last time she and David Duchovny were on screen together as Mulder and Scully was for the 2008 movie The X-Files: I Want to Believe, which was a disappointment both critically and commercially. Still, although there has been talk of a third X-Files film, Fox now seems to be eager to take things in a different direction. They want to bring The X-Files back to TV and that may be closer to happening than you think. Hit the jump for more details.

According to EW, Fox TV Group chairman Gary Newman recently confirmed that the network is holding discussions about bringing The X-Files back to TV. It would be more of a follow-up than a reboot, with Duchovny and Anderson reprising their roles and Chris Carter returning in a creative capacity. They are all on board but the big stumbling block seems to be scheduling. Still, Newman says they are “hopeful” that they will be able to make it happen.

Perhaps the biggest reason why a return to TV is being considered now is because of the success Fox had with the 24: Live Another Day mini-series last year. It seems likely that The X-Files revival would follow a similar limited format. The previously announced return of Twin Peaks is also further proof that this might be the right time for them to bring back The X-Files. So what do you think? Would you like to see Mulder and Scully return to TV? Would this be preferable to another X-Files movie?

This was a great show for six years. But, it ran eight. No interest in this. But, I don’t watch TV anymore anyway. Why am I commenting? Because I really hate DAGGET!

Bring ‘em back in tv format where they belong. Also, now with enough perspective hopefully they will get over issues that dragged down the show (the alien arc ran the show into the ground, scully’s child etc.)

Best show ever! Every episode of the first 6-7 seasons was exciting as you never quite knew what to expect in terms of what they were investigating. I think the television landscape is ripe again for these episodic structured stories instead of one huge arc over several seasons.

What’s good for Twin Peaks, will be copied by X-Files. Same as it ever was.

It funny how people kept creaming about True Detective’s long tracking shot like it was never done before on TV when The X-Files did four of them in one episode (Triangle). The best of which, the one with Scully in the FBI office, pisses on True Detective’s.

I loved the X Files but I hope this isn’t true. It could never live up to the original episodes.

I wish Chris Carter would write and produce something else for television. That would be interesting.

There are so many X-Files copies out there now, that I’m not sure there’s room for the original, especially when it will probably be a shadow of its earlier seasons.

I would love to see them back!

The alien storyline was dumb, and even the finale episode about it was disappointing. Even the X-Files video game on PS2 seemed interesting at first, about a couple of teenage witches, then that somehow turned into the alien storyline.

Man, I have some fond memories of the original show. The last few seasons lost me as a viewer, but it’d be great to recapture something approaching that freshness and vibe The X-Files introduced those many years ago. Sigh.
