Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Hobbit Hoards Holiday Riches

The final weekend of 2014 was a big one at the box office as the top 12 combined for the highest total of the year. None of the new Christmas Day releases could catch The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, however, as the Peter Jackson film earned another $41 million. Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods were neck in neck for second place, both earning approximately $31 million with Unbroken looking to have a slight edge. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and Annie rounded out the top 5. The biggest disappointment among the new releases would seem to be The Gambler starring Mark Wahlberg, which debuted in seventh place with just $9.3 million. For whatever reason, audiences stayed away, perhaps due to mixed reviews and potentially depressing subject matter. Tim Burton’s Big Eyes was also a non-starter, earning just $2.9 million although it was playing on 1000 fewer screens.
