Sony Leak Reveals Plans for a Spider-Man Comedy and 21 Jump Street / Men in Black Crossover

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard by now that Sony Pictures was hit pretty hard by hackers a couple of weeks ago (allegedly a retaliation for the upcoming Seth Rogen / James Franco film The Interview), causing several movies to leak online and all kinds of internal memos and documents. While I haven’t had the time or inclination to read up on most of this stuff (you can read a quick summary here), there are a few interesting tidbits that have turned up with regards to the future of several major Sony franchises. One of them is The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, which we already know they are struggling with, and the other is the Men in Black series, which they are apparently looking to combine with something else. Because, hey, why not? In both cases, they are looking to enlist the help of Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Hit the jump for more info.
According to The Wall Street Journal, e-mails to and from Sony Pictures head honcho Amy Pascal reveal some of their potential plans for the Spider-Man franchise including the fact that they had considered letting Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spidey films where Sony would retain creative control, marketing and distribution. Marvel had also asked about including Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, but sadly neither of these deals went through. They are, however, apparently developing a CG animated Spider-Man comedy from Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) because… why? One thing that was mentioned but seems to have been removed from the original article is that they were looking at bringing Sam Raimi back to the franchise as well.
However, even more surprising than an animated Spider-Man comedy is the fact that they are apparently looking at turning the 22 Jump Street sequel into a crossover with Men in Black. The idea is that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum would be pulled into the wacky sci-fi universe of the MIB films as a way to reinvigorate that franchise without requiring major appearances from Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones. They are aiming for a release in 2016 or 2017 and Phil Lord and Chris Miller are on board to produce and possibly even direct. Now granted, it’s unclear how solid this stuff is… it seems more like an example of the crazy ideas that float around in the minds of studio execs but never see the light of day. Would you be interested in a 21 Jump Street / MIB crossover?
