Ryan Reynolds Officially Signs on for Deadpool Movie

Although it’s looking pretty certain that Ryan Reynolds will not be reprising his role as the Green Lantern in any upcoming DC Universe movies, he will still get the chance to headline another comic book movie in the near future. Earlier this year Fox finally got serious about making a movie based on Deadpool, the fast-talking mercenary who appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009. Reynolds played the character in that film, but it wasn’t entirely clear if he was still attached to the solo movie since it wouldn’t be directly connected to the X-Men franchise and no deal was yet in place. Now this week we are hearing that he is on board and all systems are go. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Ryan Reynolds is now in the process of closing a deal to star in Deadpool for 20th Century Fox. Yesterday he also posted a message on Twitter essentially confirming the news. Tim Miller will direct from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland).

If all goes according to plan, production will start sometime in March. The movie is scheduled to hit theatres on Feb. 12th, 2016, just three months before X-Men: Apocalypse. What do you think, is this exciting news? Will Deadpool break Ryan Reynolds out of his box office slump?

This is very exciting. I think Reynolds is perfect for the role of Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds needs to fire his agent.

I hope i t’s not going to be the same type of Deadpool that we saw in the movie X Men Origins Wolverine. Because that Deadpool sucked.

Why even bother making a pg-13 Deadpool movie.

  • PlanBFromOuterSpace

Deadpool’s pretty much a PG-13 character though and always has been, aside from a brief Marvel MAX run. The violence has always been over-the-top and cartoonish, so if someone’s griping about Deadpool getting a PG-13 treatment, they probably don’t know Deadpool very well as a character at all.

  • I hope Ryan Reynolds does the character justice. As much as I hated how they ruined the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I have faith DC will do better the second time around. Let’s just hope they learned from their past mistakes.

  • I agree especially after the horrible Green Lantern film, Reynolds wants to be remembered for playing Deadpool, NOT Green Lantern (even though he wasn’t the main reason why the film was disappointing).
