Krysten Ritter is Jessica Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch Confirmed for Doctor Strange

After Warner Brothers unveiled the Suicide Squad cast earlier this week, Marvel has responded in kind with a few casting announcements of their own, one of which has been a long time coming. After hearing for months that Joaquin Phoenix was a lock to star in Doctor Strange, talks ultimately broke down leaving Marvel back at square one. Then we heard that Benedict Cumberbatch had entered negotiations for the role, but even at Marvel’s big Phase Three press conference there was still no official announcement. Now this week they have finally confirmed that Cumberbatch is in, and they have also apparently settled on a lead for their Jessica Jones TV series. Hit the jump for more details.
According to a press release from Marvel, Benedict Cumberbatch has officially signed on to play Doctor Stephen Strange. Producer Kevin Feige says that the story requires “an actor capable of great depth and sincerity” and that he is confident that Cumberbatch will “show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.” The movie is scheduled to hit theatres on Nov. 4th, 2016 and is being directed by Scott Derrickson.
As for Marvel’s Jessica Jones series, it is one of several shows they are developing with Netflix and also the latest subject of casting speculation. Last week we heard that Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad), Alexandra Daddario (The Percy Jackson series), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Jessica De Gouw (Dracula, Arrow) were all testing for the lead role, a retired superhero turned detective, but Deadline is reporting that they have now settled on Ritter. Mike Colter (The Good Wife) is supposedly their top choice to play Jones’ husband Luke Cage, who will also eventually be getting his own series. What do you think about these latest additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
