Jean-Claude Van Damme Signs on for Kickboxer Remake

Over the past year or so, we’ve seen a handful of classic Jean-Claude Van Damme action movies being lined up for remakes including Timecop, Bloodsport and Kickboxer. Although the first two are still in fairly early stages of development, Kickboxer is well on its way to the big screen having just started production this week in New Orleans. The previously announced cast features an impressive line-up that includes Tony Jaa, Scott Adkins, Dave Bautista, Georges St. Pierre in addition to newcomer Alain Moussi. Unfortunately, we are now hearing that Tony Jaa has been forced to bow out at the last minute due to a scheduling conflict. Instead they have replaced him with the next best thing: JCVD himself! Here’s what producer Ted Field had to say about the last minute casting change:
“We are so excited to have Kickboxer roll into production and to have JCVD in the role of Master Chow, passing the torch to Alain, to have him lead the franchise to a new generation… Audiences better get ready for this incredible reboot. The action is going to be non-stop with never-before seen stunts. Simply put, Kickboxer will kick-ass!”
So now Van Damme will be starring in a remake of one of his own films, this time playing the master instead of the student. It certainly seems appropriate. It’s unclear how much actual fighting he might be doing in the film, but obviously his involvement adds legitimacy to a project that some fans might see as a sacrilege. Strangely, the project now seems to have two directors attached: John Stockwell (Blue Crush, In the Blood) and Stephen Fung (Tai Chi Zero). Are you looking forward to the new Kickboxer?
