Michelle MacLaren in Talks to Direct Wonder Woman

Update: THR has confirmed that Michelle MacLaren has officially signed on to direct and develop Wonder Woman.

Last month, Warner Brothers sparked some controversy when they announced that they were pursuing a female director for their upcoming Wonder Woman movie. Some fans insisted that they should choose the best candidate for the job regardless of gender, but the reported shortlist of potential directors did have some decent choices including Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Mimi Leder (Deep Impact) and Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body). Now this week we are hearing that Warner Brothers will not be going with any of those directors, but rather one of the lesser known helmers originally mentioned as a possibility. Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones director Michelle MacLaren is now reportedly in talks to direct the film, and based on initial reactions, many think she is indeed the best woman for the job.

The news that Michelle MacLaren had emerged as the frontrunner was originally reported by THR, who also claimed that Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland) had met with the studio. Since then, Variety has confirmed that MacLaren is now in talks to direct. Although she has never directed a feature film, her directing style has reportedly drawn comparisons to Kathryn Bigelow (whatever that means).

Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander recently made headlines after stating in an interview that she wouldn’t direct Wonder Woman even if she was offered it. She claimed that there would be too much pressure for the film to succeed and too many factors beyond her control. It’s hard to argue with that, but is that really a good reason not to try? Wonder Woman will hit theatres on June 23, 2017… do you think Michelle MacLaren is the best choice to direct?

Punisher: War Zone was a pretty terrible Marvel movie. So I can see why Lexi would feel somewhat pressured to direct another “hero/vigilante” film. MacLaren seems like a better choice.

I’m tired of these TV directors geting film jobs. What does she know about film-making? Has she even touched film in her life?!
