Jonathan Nolan Developing Foundation TV Series for HBO

By now, you might be tempted to think that virtually every well-known and influential sci-fi story ever created has been adapted for the screen in some way. But of course, you’d be wrong. Right near the top of that list of important unadapted works would be Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, a book series so beloved that it remains the only series ever to win a Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series. Of course, one of the reasons it has never been made into a movie or TV series is because it revolves around a mathematician who is able to predict the future using a combination of history, sociology and statistics. A few years back, Sony picked up the big screen rights and assigned Roland Emmerich to direct, which sounded like the worst idea ever. Now this week we’ve learned that the project has found a much more suitable home at HBO instead.

According to The Wrap, HBO is teaming up with Warner Bros. TV to produce a TV series based on Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy. The project will be written and produced by Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest). He is obviously no stranger to brainy sci-fi having co-written Interstellar with his brother and he is currently working with J.J. Abrams and HBO on their upcoming Westworld series.

Although the news has yet to be confirmed, Nolan did make the following comments about Foundation to Indiewire earlier this month:

“Well, I fucking love the Foundation novels by Isaac Asimov. They’re certainly not well-known, but that’s a set of books I think everyone would benefit from reading. That’s a set of books where the influence they have is just fucking massive. They have many imitators and many have been inspired by them, but go back and read those, and there are some ideas in those that’ll set your fucking hair on fire.”

So there you go… apparently he’s a fan. What do you think, is TV the right format for the Foundation series or is it simply impossible to adapt?

Every now and then, something magical happens in the world of television and 90% of the time, it’s on HBO. Pumped.

I’m not sure how it will be done. It hops ahead hundreds of years at a time. Maybe if they treat each section as a season, then leap forward for the next season? Hmm. I’ll check it out, either way. The original three Foundation books are amongst my all time favorite novels.
