Last month when Warner Brothers officially announced their upcoming DC Universe plans, the line-up included Suicide Squad, an all-star supervillain movie with David Ayer at the helm. The same day, a report surfaced indicating that they were setting their sights on some serious A-list talent for the film with THR claiming that they were looking at Ryan Gosling, Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Tom Hardy as potential stars. At the time, the likelihood of actually landing any of them (much less all of them) seemed pretty low, but now at least one of the names appears to be closing in on a deal. And that’s not all… we’ve also got another big name Oscar-winning actor rumoured to be taking on the role of The Joker. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

According to The Wrap, Jared Leto is currently circling David Ayer’s Suicide Squad as WB’s top choice to play The Joker, the role that Ryan Gosling was previously being courted for. Leto was previously said to be in contention to play Doctor Strange for Marvel, but as of yet he still has not settled on a follow-up to Dallas Buyers Club, the movie that netted him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It’s unclear how extensive The Joker’s role would be but clearly this could spark some controversy considering the love that exists for Heath Ledger’s take on the character in The Dark Knight.

Meanwhile, Collider is also reporting that Margot Robbie will play The Joker’s frequent accomplice and love interest, Harley Quinn in the film. The Australian actress already proved that she can pull off a Brooklyn accent in The Wolf of Wall Street, but beyond that, I’m not entirely sure that she’s right for the part. She does have roles in some big upcoming movies, however, including Tarzan and Focus, so she will probably be an even bigger star by the time Suicide Squad hits theatres in August of 2016. We’re also hearing that Jesse Eisenberg might carry his Lex Luthor role over from Batman v Superman to this film as well. What do you think about these casting choices for Suicide Squad?
