After spending the last couple of years focusing on his TV series Derek, it looks like British comedian Ricky Gervais is getting ready to give the big screen another shot. Earlier this year he announced that he was working on a feature film spin-off from The Office entitled Life on the Road. The movie will revolve around David Brent going on tour with his band, Foregone Conclusion, and it will utilize the familiar mockumentary format. Now this week we have another big screen project to add to his plate: a remake of the 2009 French comedy Special Correspondents. Sadly, his former partner in crime Stephen Merchant does not appear to be involved in either one.

According to Variety, Ricky Gervais will write, direct and produce a remake of Frédéric Auburtin’s Envoyés très spéciaux aka Special Correspondents. He will also star in the film alongside Eric Bana. The plot synopsis for the remake is as follows:

“The story will follow Bana’s character, a struggling New York-based radio journalist whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. With his job on the line, he fakes front line war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Spanish restaurant in the heart of Manhattan.”

This will potentially be the first time that Gervais directs a feature film on his own and it will also be the first time he directs material that is not based on his own original concept. His previous films, Cemetery Junction and The Invention of Lying, earned mixed reviews at best. What do you think, does this project sound like it has potential?
