After making a name for himself as both a novelist and a screenwriter, Alex Garland is now making the jump to director with a film called Ex Machina. The movie stars Domhnall Gleeson (The Harry Potter Series) as a young programmer who wins a competition to spend a week with the CEO of the company that he works for (Oscar Isaac) at his private estate. While there, he is asked to test Ava (Alicia Vikander), a state of the art female A.I. that is more clever and deceptive than they could have ever predicted. Similar to Garland’s previous collaborations with Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Sunshine), this looks to combine thought-provoking sci-fi with some unsettling horror and suspense elements.
