Christian Bale Will Play Steve Jobs After All

Earlier this year, the blogosphere was buzzing with news that David Fincher was in talks to reteam with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin for a Steve Jobs biopic. Fincher had a few major stipulations before signing on, however, one of which was that he would only direct the movie if Christian Bale played the lead role. In the end, he dropped out of the project (possibly due to salary demands) and Danny Boyle signed on instead. Strangely, Boyle’s choice for the lead role was Leonardo DiCaprio, an actor well-known for starring in biopics, but one that didn’t really seem to fit the part. Fortunately, DiCaprio ditched the project a few months later and now it appears that Fincher’s original choice will be starring in the movie anyway. Hit the jump to get the low down.

Last week THR was reporting that Christian Bale had entered into talks to play Steve Jobs for Sony’s upcoming biopic based on the book by Walter Isaacson. We knew that he was still one of Sony’s top choices, along with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper, but it was unclear if he would have time since he was about to sign on to star in The Deep Blue Goodbye for Fox. Now this week Aaron Sorkin confirmed to Bloomberg that Bale is officially on board:

“We needed the best actor on the board in a certain age range and that’s Chris Bale. He didn’t have to audition. Well, there was a meeting… He has more words to say in this movie than most people have in three movies combined. There isn’t a scene or a frame that he’s not in. So it’s an extremely difficult part and he is gonna crush it.”

Clearly it also helps that Bale has a strong physical resemblance to Steve Jobs. Either way, this is exciting news and the movie is expected to start production sometime in the next few months. Are you looking forward to this particular take on the Steve Jobs story and do you think Christian Bale will indeed “crush it”?

who gives a CRAP about some washed up movie actor, and who gives a CRAP about some guy who invented computers

  • Seems like a pretty great match, what with Bale’s behind the scenes blow ups and Jobs’ apparent freak outs on co-workers. I don’t necessarily think the actor HAS to resemble the person, but in the case of Bale vs. DiCaprio, I think Bale can transform more into a character, and Leo is just Leo, most of the time.
