The Look of Silence Trailer: Joshua Oppenheimer’s Companion Piece to The Act of Killing

Joshua Oppenheimer’s powerful and disturbing film The Act of Killing was one of the most talked about documentaries of last year, taking former participants in the Indonesian genocide from 1965 to 1966 and asking them to re-enact horrific events as if they are starring in their own Hollywood gangster movie. The movie earned an Academy Award nomination even though it was ultimately robbed by 20 Feet from Stardom, but now this year Oppenheimer is back with a follow-up film that seems a lot more straightforward.
Once again he is confronting the perpetrators, but this time it is quite literally through the lens of an optometrist whose brother was murdered five decades ago. The first trailer for the film mostly sells itself using quotes from critics, but you can get a sense of the quiet beauty and underlying tension involved. The Look of Silence hits theatres sometime in 2015 but will likely have a qualifying run for the Oscars later this year; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
