Although Mark Wahlberg had a big whiff at the Oscars last year with Lone Survivor, he’s looking to sneak back into contention this year with a remake of the 1974 James Toback classic The Gambler. The original film starred James Caan as a Harvard University-educated English professor with a gambling addiction who goes to Las Vegas in order erase his debts and ends up falling further in the hole. Although the remake was originally intended for Martin Scorsese to direct, Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) eventually took the reins. The cast also includes John Goodman, Jessica Lange, Brie Larson, Michael K. Williams and the script was written by William Monahan (The Departed).
