Eli Roth to Produce Cabin Fever Remake

It was over a decade ago that a first-time filmmaker named Eli Roth brought a little horror movie called Cabin Fever to the Toronto International Film Festival, which sparked a bidding war and kickstarted his career. Although he soon followed it up with Hostel, Cabin Fever eventually went on to spawn a pair of direct-to-video sequels, neither of which he had any involvement in. Now Roth is set to return to the Cabin Fever franchise by overseeing a remake of the original film. He won’t be directing it, but he is officially on board as executive producer, thus giving it his seal of approval. But is Cabin Fever really a movie that is begging to be remade?
According to Variety, filming is now underway for a Cabin Fever remake in Portland, Ore, with director Travis Zariwny (Scavengers) at the helm. The movie is being shot from Eli Roth’s original script with a cast that includes Gage Golightly (Teen Wolf), Dustin Ingram (Paranormal Activity 3), Samuel Davis (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series). Roth had this to say about the project:
“Travis had an amazing vision for my original script, and, as a scary movie fan, I really wanted to see it… I almost see this like re-staging a play, and I’m excited to see what ideas Travis and the cast bring to it.”
It’s unclear just how different his vision could be, considering that he is working from the exact same script. I’m not entirely convinced that it would be possible to repeat the magic of Dennis (aka the kid who says “Pancakes!”). What do you think, could a Cabin Fever actually be worthwhile? Will it at least be superior to the DTV sequels?
