Jamie Kennedy to Star in Tremors 5

Believe it or not, next year will mark the 25th anniversary of Tremors, the cult classic monster movie about a small town in Nevada being terrorized by giant underground worms. The movie spawned three direct-to-video sequels over the years with the last one premiering back in 2004 on the Sci-Fi Channel. Although there have been rumours of a fifth Tremors movie for years now, just a couple of months ago we started to hear that a reboot might be happening instead. Well, this week the official word has come down and it looks like a new movie is indeed happening. The good news is that it looks to be a sequel rather than a reboot. The bad news? The sequel is going to co-star Jamie Kennedy.
According to a press release from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, Tremors 5 is currently in production in South Africa and will get a release on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital HD sometime in 2016. The movie will once again find Michael Gross reprising his role as weapons expert Burt Gummer, this time joined by a new tech-savvy partner played by Jamie Kennedy (Scream, Malibu’s Most Wanted, Son of the Mask). Here is an excerpt from the announcement:
“The theatrical release of the original Tremors in 1990 combined suspense-filled action, sci-fi imagination and witty humor in the tale of a tiny Nevada town terrorized by giant man-eating worms known as Graboids. The Graboids eventually morphed into even more deadly creatures known as Ass Blasters. In this all-new adventure that travels halfway around the world to South Africa, the Graboids and the Ass Blasters are not only bigger and badder but Tremors 5 introduces an additional unexpected surprise that raises the stakes in the battle for survival.”
The movie is being directed by John Michael Paul (Sniper: Legacy, Jarhead 2: Field of Fire) from a script by John Whelpley (Tremors 3: Back to Perfection). There is no word on the involvement of original writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who also directed the previous sequels. Sadly, it seems that the possibility of a new original project that would reteam them with Tremors director Ron Underwood has all but evaporated.
