Sofia Coppola to Direct Bill Murray Christmas Special

If you’re one of those people who watches Scrooged multiple times every holiday season (and we all know at least one), you might be interested in this next bit of oddball news. It seems that Bill Murray is in the process of developing a brand new Christmas-themed project, although in this case it is intended for the small screen rather than the big screen. Murray recently revealed that he is planning a made-for-TV Christmas special where he will belt out several classic Christmas carols. The songs won’t be performed live, however, and instead the collaboration will find him reteaming with Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola. Here’s what he had to say about it:
“It’s not going to be live… We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose. It will have a patina style and wit to it. It will be nice.”
While you might almost think that Bill Murray is just joking around about this, Sofia Coppola has confirmed her involvement, saying “my motivation is to hear him singing my song requests.” Obviously he performed karaoke for the movie Lost in Translation, but also his new movie St. Vincent apparently features a scene where Murray sings Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From the Storm.” At this point these kinds of TV specials are pretty old-fashioned, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s probably Bill Murray. What do you think… would you watch a Bill Murray Christmas Special?
