Let Us Pick Your Brain: Fill Out the 2014 Film Junk Survey

survey

It’s that time again! Every now and then we like to check in with our readers and listeners to make sure that Film Junk is continuing to evolve in a way that makes them happy. This is your chance to sound off and tell us what we’re doing wrong… preferably in a constructive way, obviously! This doesn’t mean that we’re planning any drastic changes (unless you think we need some), we are simply trying to figure out how to emphasize our strengths and minimize our weaknesses. Most of the questions are focused on the podcast, but if you also have suggestions for the site itself, let us know. Fill out the survey after the jump, then feel free to throw in your two cents in the comments as well. Thanks!

Note: This survey uses Google Forms so you will have to be logged into a Google account in order to view it and fill it out. If you do not use any Google services you will not be able to respond, but feel free to e-mail us with any feedback you might have.

  • Annette

    Doesn´t load on Mozilla Firefox… :(

  • Sean

Hmm. I tested it on Firefox and it worked for me, but here’s another direct link to try:

  • BatemanBegins

Referencing Brazil is one of the quickest ways into my heart.

  • Thurston

Thanks for the feedback Sean, Jay and Frank. The Film Junk podcast is my favorite! (and I listen to many podcasts). It was fun to fill out.

  • devolutionary

Weird that you included Cantakerous under the “regularly listen(ed) to” podcasts section. There’s nothing regular about it.

  • Sean

Bad wording I guess. Mainly just wanted to ask if you always listen to new episodes of those other podcasts whenever they are released.

  • devolutionary

Hey I requested a CanFrankerous (Prescribing Frank) edition, so no worries. This might also take the heat (and sweat) off him during regular film discussion.

  • devolutionary

It doesn’t seem to load properly in-page on Firefox if you haven’t already signed in to Google services.

  • Tom

Sean, any chance of bringing back Jay´s rant alarm?
By far the funniest/most memorable section of the original podcast(quite possibly of any FJ episode ever), greatly beloved and dearly missed.

  • CyEd

No option for thousand star rating system!?

  • Jonathan Hinson

Great questions on the survey guys. That was fun! Bottom line – if you want my 2 cents, don’t change a thing. Film Junk is hands down my favorite PodCast, and I regularly listen to a slew of them. I haven’t missed an episode, and I’ve bought every single premium, and will continue to do so as long as you keep churning them out.

  • FDB

It’s Friday night and I actually had fun doing that. Embarrassing.

  • pcch7

I gave a 4 out of 5 on audio quality but that’s only because it sounds even better in the premiums.

  • Reed Farrington

There are some people who replay the existing episodes of Cantankerous over and over again.

  • Stinker

you are right. 5 times and counting. B

  • Tim

Me too! I love Cantankerous~ Great fun!

  • Luke

I´d actually prefer Frank venting his anger on the regular podcast considering Jay completely stopped ranting long ago (which is unfortunate)

  • toby

No changes whatsoever, this shit is perfect! But I guess a poll every now and then is a good idea.

Btw Sean, Nolan Special was re-released before Inception in 2010, not before TDK like the glossary says. I assume it was originally recorded before TDK? Also, Blart aka blood fart should probably be in the glossary too.

  • One thing i mentioned in the survey would be the inclusion of Jay, Frank and Reed on the website. Perhaps a news story or other blog type content once a week would be great in my opinion.

  • Sam

That wouldn’t be bad. I’d imagine is mostly a time issue for them. Except with Reed that is.

Maybe a weekly entry from Reed on his shopping experiences for the week? Maybe he bought a new dog outfit? Maybe he bought Larger Than Life starring “Bill Mary” for under a $1? I think Film Junk deserves to know.

  • kent88

It was fun filling out this survey but please don’t pay too much attention to what we the listeners think. We’re dumb. Do what you want.

  • Maik

I´d love Jay writing a male masturbation column from time to time. He is famously obsessed with jerking off and I´d bet he has some valuable tips and delightful anecdotes.

  • Essie

More than any other podcast ever. We need more!

  • Essie

If people vote for shows under two hours they are lying so ignore those. :)

  • Glen

Get back to making more Cantankerous Podcasts, Reed. We love them.

  • When they did this survey a few years ago (before I was a die-hard junker) I checked the “multiple half-hour episodes” box. I’m still ashamed of that to this day. God forgive me.

  • Kasper

I wish there was a box for multiple 2-hour-plus shows a week.

  • Anthony Hebert

I still think that The Blade Trilogy (plus Blacula) for Black History Month/ February would be pretty hype.

  • Kasper

And it also fits with there being great and absolutely terrible movies. I support this motion!

  • Annette

I´m really hoping for a rare Jay-rant during your upcoming review of “Horns”, cause that is a fucking huge mess of a movie.
Emberassingly outdated and incredibly unfocused and inconsistent.
The smartphone/comicbookmovie generation might love this though as they can´t concentrate for longer than a milisecond.
    Can´t believe Aja made this.

  • ReelJunkie

    - More Cantankerous (at least bi-monthly). C’mon Reed!
    – More Jay rants and singing.
    – More Jay explicitly talking about r-rated B movies

  • ReelJunkie

Agreed. Need more articles like Film Junk’s Top 10 Gag Inducing Sex Scenes.

  • B.J.

“Psychoanalyzing Frank” is always a win!

  • Mod65

    How about a JUMPJUNK Premium!?!
Nothing will sell like Frank having to watch jumpy movies, I´m telling ya~~~
    $$$ KA-CHING!!! $$$$

  • Dstrbpx

I would like to see the neverending comicbook casting/production rumours go from Filmjunk. Listening to the archives really puts this in perspective- as an incredible waste of time. The news segment should contain anything except , as Jay once famously called it, “all the fanboy garbage”.

  • Colin

    Make CanFRANKerous happen.

  • The thing that sucks is that fanboy garbage brings a lot of traffic to the site (I would imagine, anyway), but I think most listeners of the podcast wouldn’t miss it. Unless it’s something that’s going to generate interesting discussion, like the bridges in TDKR trailer, it might be worth cutting since it seems to put Jay to sleep immediately.

  • Dstrbpx

There are already a gazzillion sites dedicated to the “fanboy garbage”. I think it would be a great advantage for Filmjunk to cut all that gossip and just cater to the movieloving crowd.
Why be a small fish in huge geek-ocean when you can be a precious Koi in a pristine cinephile-pond?

  • Kasper

While it usually doesn’t generate any interesting discussion, it sometimes puts Jay in a bad mood and makes him complain or act childish to great comedic effect. For that alone I don’t mind hearing about the latest Star Wars or Marvel rumor.

  • Dstrbpx

I have to admit that Jay in a bad mood is always the best possible Jay.

  • iammattz

I could not agree more. Just keep doing what you guys do – I’m loving the ride.

  • Lori Cerny

    Worked on Opera for me.

  • Lior

The fun in Cantankerous was just Jay picking out Reed’s brain. Since in the past year or so he has been doing the exact same thing to Frank on the regular show (to epic proportions, we just got a new segment out of it), then that need in listeners has been fulfilled to some degree. Having said that, of course I’d love a new episode. Also, and Reed, correct me if I’m wrong, I think you’ve become a little too self-conscious about this whole thing. The great thing about the early episodes of Cantankerous was that there was something very genuine and authentic and unscripted about them.

  • Sean

The problem with eliminating “fanboy garbage” is that what one person considers garbage, someone else might consider a legitimate news story. And people still enjoy complaining about a lot of that stuff even if they aren’t that interested in it. Aside from blockbuster movies, there isn’t a whole lot of movie “news” on a daily basis that people are interested in. And yeah, we could write more feature articles and reviews, but that stuff is a lot more work and I don’t have the time.

On the website, I generally write about what I am interested in or what I think are the biggest news stories of the day. I don’t tend to write about completely unconfirmed rumours and speculation very often. On the podcast, most of this stuff has already been eliminated because Jay and Frank will veto a lot it beforehand anyway.

  • devolutionary

As long as it generates naturally, I’m all for it. That way they really let their guard down. There’s been a few episodes where the psychoanalysis or ribbing seemed overly forced and you could tell Frank was not biting.

  • One thing I forgot to mention when I filled it out is the intro/plug for the premiums. Obviously important to have up there, but it’s pretty long and (sorry Sean) kinda dull. I tried to get a friend into the show and she mentioned being turned off by “all the plugs at the beginning of the show.” Might be something to think about. Maybe have Frank do his Jesse Ventura voice? Or turn it into a rap?

  • Sean

Well if you can’t sit through 45 seconds of us plugging for our own stuff at the top of the show, I don’t see how you’ll make it through an entire 3-hour episode. Maybe she was talking about the general in-house stuff we sometimes discuss at the beginning of the show. We try to cut down on it but it always creeps back. Sometimes it is still 10 or 15 minutes before we get to the review.

  • J.C.

Did anyone else ask for a Little House on the Prairie premium cast?

  • Kasper

I love the in-house stuff, Sean, so keep on creeping on!

  • Felix

I actually still enjoy hearing news stories from old episodes. It’s like time travel or watching old sci-fi movies, always interesting to see what ‘people of the past’ thought about the future.
