Lego Batman Movie to Hit Theatres Before The Lego Movie 2

Well it was bound to happen eventually. There are plenty of reasons for the success of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s The Lego Movie earlier this year, but one of the biggest surely must be the leveraging of the DC Comics library to include superheroes like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Their comedic take on Batman, voiced by Will Arnett, was heavily featured in the marketing of the film and proved to be quite popular with moviegoers. So popular, in fact, that he is now getting his very own movie and it is already on the fast track to theatres. Word on the street is that this spin-off will even take precedence over the previously announced sequel to The Lego Movie.

According to THR, Chris McKay, the animation supervisor on The Lego Movie who was already hired to direct the sequel, is now taking on a Lego Batman movie instead. Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Dark Shadows) is reportedly on board to write the screenplay. The movie will hit theatres sometime in 2017, while The Lego Movie 2 is being pushed back to a later date.

It’s still unclear if Lego Batman will simply take over the May 26th, 2017 release date originally slotted for The Lego Movie 2 or if it will need more time. It’s also unclear if this might open up Phil Lord and Chris Miller to return to direct the sequel. Either way, the next Lego movie to hit theatres will be Ninjago, which will arrive on Sept. 23, 2016 from Tron: Uprising director Charlie Bean. Are you stoked for a Lego Batman movie or are they already spreading this franchise too thin?

So there’s going to be a Lego Batman movie before a regular Batman movie?
