Last week The Maze Runner earned one of the biggest September openings ever, and now this week The Equalizer has done the same. The Denzel Washington flick took in $34 million in its first weekend, proving that Denzel still has widespread appeal as one of the most consistent A-list actors working today. It was also the third highest debut of Denzel’s career behind American Gangster and Safe House. Impressive. The Maze Runner fell to #2 while The Boxtrolls opened in third with a decent $17 million — more than both Coraline and ParaNorman made in their opening weekends. This Is Where I Leave You and Dolphin Tale 2 rounded out the top 5. Meanwhile, the movie that was hurt the most by the success of The Equalizer was Liam Neeson’s A Walk Among the Tombstones, which fell from second all the way to seventh.
