William Shatner to Return for Roberto Orci’s Star Trek 3?

When J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot hit theatres back in 2009, there was a lot of talk about the fact that Leonard Nimoy ended up being the bridge between the original continuity and the new continuity, while William Shatner was left out of the film (which, at one point, he seemed to be quite upset about). From what we know, there were plans to add a cameo for Shatner as well, but only as a holographic message to Spock. The scene was eventually cut, mainly because the writers wanted to bring Kirk back in person. The problem is that it wouldn’t really make sense given the events in Star Trek: Generations. Fortunately, now that a new timeline has been forged, it appears that writer / director Roberto Orci may have found a place for Kirk in the next Star Trek movie. The question is, will Shatner agree to do it?
According to Badass Digest, Roberto Orci’s first draft of the script for Star Trek 3 has William Shatner reprising his role as James T. Kirk. What’s more, it will also put him on screen together with Leonard Nimoy as Spock, the first time that has happened since Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991. Considering that they are both 83 years old, this could very well be their last chance to make it happen.
It’s unclear how big their roles would be, but the appearance is supposedly “plot-driven and integral enough that it might just survive any future revisions.” That sounds like it would be substantial enough to get Shatner to sign on (assuming, of course, that he isn’t still holding a grudge). Either way, with the lack of confidence that some people have in Roberto Orci as a director, this would be a nice touch to help get Star Trek fans excited about the next movie. Would you like to see Shatner in Star Trek 3?
