Richard Kiel 1939–2014

Some sad news for James Bond fans this week. Richard Kiel, the 7’2″ actor best known for portraying the menacing Bond henchman Jaws, has passed away at the age of 74. The steel-toothed villain was a fan favourite who appeared in both The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker, and they considered bringing him back for a third appearance in For Your Eyes Only as well. Kiel’s other film roles include Guy Hamilton’s Force 10 from Navarone, Italian Star Wars knock-off The Humanoid, Happy Gilmore and Disney’s Tangled. His family released the following statement on Facebook earlier today:

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce that Richard has passed away, just three days shy of his 75th birthday. Richard had an amazing joy for life and managed to live every single day to the fullest. Though most people knew of him through his screen persona, those who were close to him knew what a kind and generous soul he was. His family was the most important thing in his life and we are happy that his last days were spent surrounded by family and close friends. Though his passing was somewhat unexpected, his health had been declining in recent years. It is nice to think that he can, once again, stand tall over us all.

With love,

The Kiel Family

The cause of death has not been made public but he had reportedly been hospitalized after breaking his leg last week. Either way, Kiel’s iconic role as Jaws is certainly one that will continue to be remembered for many years to come. What are your favourite Richard Kiel performances?
