23 Jump Street Officially Moving Forward

Although the overall box office numbers were way down this summer, there were still at least a handful of major releases that performed admirably. Aside from the comic book movies and the big sci-fi films, there was one comedy that managed to crack $300 million worldwide: 22 Jump Street. The Jonah Hill / Channing Tatum sequel improved on its predecessor by a decent margin and is currently the 10th highest grossing movie of the year in the U.S. Add up those numbers and it’s no surprise that they are moving forward with another sequel. The question is, will Phil Lord and Chris Miller return to direct?

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures and Original Film have started development on a 22 Jump Street sequel, which will obviously be titled 23 Jump Street. Rodney Rothman, who co-wrote 22 Jump Street and the DeNiro / Stallone boxing comedy Grudge Match, has been hired to pen the script. At the moment, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have not signed on to direct the film although they are producing and overseeing the script along with Neal Moritz, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

Ironically, the last film ended with a credit sequence that presented over 20 different fictional sequels including 23 Jump Street: Medical School and 25 Jump Street: Semester at Sea. Whether or not any of these ideas will actually be used for the third film remains to be seen, but you have to wonder if they’ve already kind of run the sequel joke into the ground. Perhaps trilogies will be the running meta-joke throughout the next film instead. Are you looking forward to 23 Jump Street?

This is amazing news – I’m ready for a third entry for sure!

I’d be looking forward to it if they didn’t have the end credits scene. Somehow I think doing that end credits scene negated a sequel since they poked fun at the endless sequels in series.

How about “22 1/2 Jump Street”? BAM. No continuity issues. At all.
