Shadow of the Colossus Movie Gets a New Director

It’s no secret that director Josh Trank is a pretty busy man these days. Coming off the success of Chronicle in 2012, he found himself being offered increasingly bigger opportunities, eventually ending up at the helm of both the Fantastic Four reboot for Fox and a Star Wars spin-off film for Disney. Since then, some of his other projects have fallen by the wayside, including Sony’s Venom movie which has since been taken over by Alex Kurtzman. Now he has been forced to step down from another Sony project that he was previously attached to: an adaptation of the Playstation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus. Sony will be moving forward without him and this week they have found a new director to take over.

According to Variety, Argentine director Andres Muschietti has signed on to direct the big screen adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures. Muschietti’s first film, the horror flick Mama, was executive produced by Guillermo del Toro and proved to be a surprise hit for Universal last year. Muschietti’s sister Barbara has also come on board the project as a producer while Seth Lochhead (Hanna) is writing the script.

Last year, Andres Muschietti was attached to direct The Mummy reboot but eventually dropped out due to creative differences. Shadow of the Colossus also seems like a good fit for him, especially considering his genre roots and experience with CG creatures. Clearly this will be on a much bigger scale than Mama, however. Are you looking forward to a Shadow of the Colossus movie?
