Minority Report TV Series in the Works

The list of upcoming TV shows based on movies continues to grow this week as Steven Spielberg is reportedly in the process of developing a TV version of his 2002 sci-fi film Minority Report. Although it is still in the early stages, it would potentially join several other sci-fi movies also coming to the small screen including Westworld and 12 Monkeys. Of course, the FX adaptation of The Coen Brothers’ Fargo has now set the bar quite high for TV adaptations of movies, so Spielberg might have his work cut out for him. His recent sci-fi series Extant has been a minor hit for CBS this summer, but in general his TV projects tend to be pretty forgettable. Can Minority Report work as a weekly TV series?

According to The Wrap, Godzilla writer Max Borenstein will pen the upcoming Minority Report TV show for Amblin Television. The story will revolve around Washington D.C.’s PreCrime unit, a department of the police force that uses psychics known as “precogs” to look into the future and stop crimes before they happen. They are reportedly looking to cast a name actor for the lead role, and although 20th Century Fox distributed the film, it is unclear if Fox will have first crack at the series.

Although the material does seem suitable for a weekly episodic series, it is worth noting that the J.J. Abrams android buddy cop series Almost Human took place in a comparable near-future world and did not make it past its first season. On the other hand, Jonathan Nolan’s show Person of Interest has a somewhat similar premise and has done consistently well for CBS. Either way, the Minority Report name probably holds some stock among sci-fi fans and could bring in a decent number of viewers. Would you watch a Minority Report TV show?
