Darren Aronofsky to Adapt Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam Trilogy as an HBO Series

Now that the dust has settled on Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, it looks as though the movie was a modest success, making $359 million worldwide (although surprisingly, Black Swan remains his most successful film domestically). That being said, the creative process on his first studio film was clearly not ideal and he seems hesitant to return to another big budget project in the near future. Instead, he is turning to the creative haven that so many other acclaimed filmmakers are now flocking to: cable television. Earlier this year Aronofsky set up a three-year first-look TV deal with HBO to produce new material for him to direct through his production company Protozoa Pictures. Now the first project from that deal is moving forward: an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian trilogy Oryx and Crake, Year Of The Flood, and MaddAddam. The basic premise is as follows:
“Set in a darkly plausible future shaped by plagues, floods, and genetic engineering, these three novels take us from the end of the world to a brave new beginning. Thrilling, moving, a triumph of imagination, this trilogy confirms the ultimate endurance of humanity, community, and love.”
HBO has officially put the project into development and Protozoa is now meeting with writers. Aronofsky will executive produce with an eye on directing, while his fiancee Brandi-Ann Milbradt will also produce along with Protozoa Pictures president Ari Handel. Margaret Atwood is on board as a consulting producer.
The story sounds intriguing and certainly like something that would fall in Aronofsky’s wheelhouse. Last we heard, he was also circling a movie called Moonfall, described as “a Fargo-like thriller set on the moon.” Are you interested in MaddAddam and are you excited to see directors like Aronofsky working with HBO?
