Judd Apatow to Produce a Lonely Island Movie

All you fans of Hot Rod… listen up! Someone is actually letting The Lonely Island guys make another movie. This time around it will quite literally revolve around The Lonely Island as a musical act, probably incorporating some of their original songs as well. For those unfamiliar with the group, The Lonely Island is Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, a trio of comedians best known for creating some of the wildly popular Saturday Night Live digital shorts including “Lazy Sunday” and “Dick in a Box”. They have also released three albums to date along with numerous related music videos. Now they are about to make their big screen debut as a group with the help of Judd Apatow.
According to THR, Universal Pictures has acquired an untitled comedy project that will star Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Schaffer previously helmed Hot Rod and The Watch while Taccone directed MacGruber, so naturally they will co-direct the film. Judd Apatow will produce through Judd Apatow Productions, along with Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone.
Not much is known about the premise of the film except that it will be set in the music world. Clearly this is their chance to make a true follow-up to Hot Rod while also leveraging their fame and name recognition as musicians. It would be interesting to see them take a Flight of the Conchords-style approach with the story broken up by musical interludes, I just hope they don’t get too carried away with celebrity cameos. What do you think, are you game for a Lonely Island feature film?
