Ghostbusters 3 to Introduce an All-Female Team, Paul Feig Top Choice to Direct

femalegb3

Just a couple of weeks after Marvel announced plans for a female Thor prior to Comic-Con, it looks as though another well-known property is about to get an unexpected gender reversal as well. Ghostbusters 3 has been in development for years now, undergoing substantial rewrites to address the fact that less and less of the original cast would be involved (Bill Murray has steadfastly refused while Harold Ramis passed away earlier this year). The plan was always to reboot the franchise by passing the torch to a younger generation of Ghostbusters, but now they seem to be going in a surprising direction with that new team. Word on the street is that the new crew will all be women and the movie will likely be helmed by Bridesmaids director Paul Feig. Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, Paul Feig is currently the frontrunner to direct Ghostbusters 3 for Sony. No formal negotiations are underway as of yet, but he is said to be interested in the project. Recently it had been reported that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie) or Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) might take the reins after Ivan Reitman dropped out but they no longer appear to be involved.

Paul Feig has directed a couple of very successful female-led comedies with Bridesmaids and The Heat, both of which starred Melissa McCarthy, and she will also star in his next film Spy. There is no word on whether they might have her in mind for Ghostbusters 3 but I shudder to think at the possibility. Either way, a female team of Ghostbusters could open the franchise up to a whole new audience but it might also potentially alienate old fans as well. How do you feel about this idea and is Paul Feig a good choice to direct?

    Female Ghostbusters? FUCK YEAH!

Laughing at all the secretly sexist geeks who are gonna flip. Boo hoo, babies.

  • Deven Science

I agree with Tum Tum. Not the aggressive 2nd part of his comment, but the 1st part. Why not? As long as it’s funny, and they cast good actresses, I’m game. It seems to me though that a mixture would fine, as well. There’s no need to go all male or all female.

  • Going all female seems like a gimmick, but tilting a cast in that direction feels right. Creatively, it’s a natural progression and opens up your characters.

Can’t wait to hear Frank’s take on this one…

Where did the idea that it’s an all-female cast come from? Not trying to be a dick, but I’ve read a few articles about this, and this is the first I’ve read about the all-female thing.

  • ECONOMYpolitica

    Not interested. Whores.

  • Flo Lieb

Sounds like its gonna be basically Bridesmaids meets Ghostbusters. Probably eyeing Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig already for this.

  • I don’t know why this makes me way more optimistic about this movie, but it does. Probably because it will lean further away from trying to just remake the original.
As long as they cast some people who are naturally funny and can improvise well, this could be great. The weakest part of The Heat by far was the improv.

I have a feeling he’s going to be against it, not because of the gender bending, but because of the people behind it(Feig and company). He plays it up like he’s a sexist but we all know it’s tongue in cheek.

    The KOC is NOT amused!!

  • I could see Tina Fey making a good Ghostbuster. Maybe bring in Rosario Dawson, Rachel Nichols, Olivia Cooke as the young blood. Could be decent.

I’d rather see a Jodo-Dune style documentary that details all the unused scripts and concept art through interviews with the screenwriters, the producers and all the actors who were approached.
The paperwork alone could insulate Bill Murray’s mansion.
