We’re still playing catch up on some of the other news stories coming out of Comic-Con this past weekend, but one of the few true surprises actually came from the Legendary Pictures panel on Saturday. Earlier this year Legendary invited speculation when they announced an “Untitled 2016 Event Project” in partnership with Universal Pictures. At the time, many thought that it might be a Namor movie, but we now know that is not the case. During their panel, Legendary announced that they would be doing a brand new King Kong movie, an origin story of sorts called Skull Island. Since then, we have also learned who might be directing the project. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Legendary Pictures already has an offer out to Attack the Block director Joe Cornish to helm Skull Island. It’s still unclear how much interest he has in the project and whether his schedule is actually open. Last we heard, he was attached to direct the spy movie Section 6 for Universal, but then they were hit with a lawsuit by MGM. Skull Island currently has a release date of November 4th, 2016.

Here is some additional info from the press release:

“Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.”

Skull Island featured heavily in Peter Jackson’s 2005 film King Kong, but it seems like this will be a complete reboot, unconnected to his vision of the character. It also seems possible that Legendary is working towards an eventual showdown between King Kong and Godzilla, although the rights for such a crossover might still be up in the air. Are you looking forward to a new King Kong movie?

They’ve been building a new “Skull Island” area with a King Kong ride
here in Orlando at Islands of Adventure for a few months now. It’s
still got a long ways to go, and there hasn’t been an official
announcement, but the internet is convinced that’s what it is. Seems to
    coincide with the new movie.
