Atari: Game Over Trailer: The Legendary E.T. Landfill Documentary

If you’re a fan of video games at all, you’ve probably already heard about the documentary in development about the New Mexico landfill where millions of copies of the Atari game E.T. were rumoured to have been buried. The ending may have already been spoiled for us, but fortunately the story seems to involve a bit more than just a treasure hunt to find a bunch of buried cartridges. It’s also about the rise and fall of a hugely successful American company and the redemption of the designer who created what is now considered one of the worst games ever made.
Atari: Game Over is the first in a series of feature-length documentaries produced by Microsoft to provide original video content for their Xbox consoles. Directed by Zak Penn (The Grand, Incident at Loch Ness) and produced by Simon and Jonathan Chinn (Searching for Sugar Man, Man on Wire, 30 Days), it looks to be a well-shot and entertaining, if somewhat gimmicky, documentary. Atari: Game Over will premiere exclusively on Xbox sometime this fall; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
