Deus Ex Movie Gets a New Writer, Loses Scott Derrickson as Director

It’s no secret that Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Deliver Us from Evil) is in high demand these days, having recently signed on to direct Doctor Strange for Marvel while also developing an Outer Limits movie, a sequel to Sinister, a Deus Ex movie and a remake of a Dutch thriller called Two Eyes Staring. Clearly something had to give and it looks like the video game adaptation Deus Ex will ultimately end up getting handed off to someone else. Derrickson already worked on the script for the cyberpunk flick with Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill, but now this week CBS Films have hired a new writer as they also prepare to start the search for a new director. Hit the jump for more details.
According to THR, screenwriter Michael Finch has signed on to do a rewrite on Deus Ex for CBS Films. Finch previously wrote Predators and the upcoming espionage thriller The November Man starring Pierce Brosnan plus he also worked on another movie based on a video game, the Hitman reboot Agent 47. Roy Lee (The Departed, The Lego Movie) and Adrian Askarieh (Hitman) are still on board as producers.
It’s not a huge surprise that Derrickson is off the Deus Ex movie since there had been very little mention of it as he continued to amass new projects. Lately it seems like these video game movies are great gigs for filmmakers who temporarily attach themselves and possibly pick up a paycheck for development work even though they actually have no intention of directing them. It would be cool to see this turn out well, but I suspect they will end up with a much less experienced person in the director’s chair. Do you still have hope for a great Deus Ex movie?
