Monday Morning Box Office Report: Transformers: Age of Extinction Stays Ahead of the Pack

As expected, Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction topped the box office once again over the weekend, but it led one of the slowest July 4th weekends since 1999. The fourth installment in the series dropped a staggering 64% to take another $36 million in its second week and now looks to be drawing a significantly smaller crowd than the previous two Transformers films. It’s still a huge movie, but it may not catch Captain America: The Winter Soldier after all. The only real challenger over the July 4th weekend was Tammy starring Melissa McCarthy, which earned $21 million. That’s not bad for an R-rated comedy, but it’s way less than Identity Thief and The Heat made last year. Deliver Us from Evil disappointed with just $9.5 million, while 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2 rounded out the top 5.

1. Transformers: Age of Extinction — $36.4M
2. Tammy — $21.2M
3. Deliver Us from Evil — $9.5M
4. 22 Jump Street — $9.4M
5. How to Train Your Dragon 2 — $8.8M
6. Earth to Echo — $8.2M
7. Maleficent — $6.1M
8. Jersey Boys — $5.2M
9. Think Like a Man Too — $4.9M
10. Edge of Tomorrow — $3.6M
