Community to Return on Yahoo Screen… Whatever That Is

centered

When it was announced last month that NBC has done the unthinkable and finally pulled the plug on Community, there was still plenty of reason to be optimistic. After all, with a plethora of new streaming content providers looking for TV properties, Community was a show that seemed like a perfect fit for their target demographic. However, last we heard, Hulu was the only service actually pursuing the rights, and last week talks broke down between Hulu and Sony Pictures Television. With the actors’ deals set to expire on June 30th, it was looking like six seasons and a movie just weren’t meant to be. But wait, lo and behold, someone has saved Greendale all over again!

According to The Wrap, the sixth season of Community will indeed move forward and it will have a home at Yahoo! Screen. It will consist of 13 half-hour episodes and it seems like most of the cast will return from the previous season. Dan Harmon had this to say:

“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo… I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”

That just leaves one question: what the hell is Yahoo! Screen? Apparently at one time it was Yahoo!’s competitor to YouTube, but they relaunched it in 2011 as an ad-supported video site complete with original programming. However, if you look at their site now, there isn’t a trace of original content to be found anywhere. Clearly this is a great way to establish themselves, but it does look like a major step down for Community. I’m guessing their budgets are going to be much lower but hopefully that doesn’t impact the quality of the show. Are you glad to see Community live on or is this just getting a bit ridiculous?

This bit of news did make me smile today. Hopefully they can make the smaller budget work and finish out this series on their own terms. Now if someone can get Donald Glover to come back for a few episodes that would be perfect.

  • As long as the writing is still there, I’m sure it will be fine. I would watch a 13-episode table read of Community.

The production budget is actually supposed to be the same as at NBC, which seems to be a big reason why they were able to make the deal with Yahoo.
I do wish that Donald Glover would return. His absence was a big blow to the show, on my opinion. I don’t know if he would return, since he has a track record of not sticking with things too long, but I haven’t really heard anything about what he’s doing now so he might be interested.

Just die already jesus h. Show sucked after season 3 and anyone who still likes it doesn’t understand what made it great in the first place.
