N.W.A. Biopic Gets a Cast and Release Date

Bad news for Jeremy Renner fans… Universal Pictures just announced that they are pushing the next Bourne movie back to 2016. So what massive summer blockbuster will be taking its place in August of next year? It’s Straight Outta Compton, the upcoming N.W.A. biopic directed by F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job, Friday)! Clearly they have high hopes for the movie and this week they have revealed the primary cast along with the first promotional photo. The announced cast members (pictured above) are as follows:
- O’Shea Jackson Jr. (playing his father Ice Cube)
- Jason Mitchell (playing the late Eazy-E)
- Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre)
And yes, in case you were confused, that’s director F. Gary Gray in the middle of the top row, not the ghost of Eazy-E. Strangely, earlier this week THR was reporting that stage actor Marcus Callender would play Dre, but he seems to have been replaced by Corey Hawkins, who appeared in Non-Stop and Iron Man 3. Dr. Dre originally wanted Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle, Fruitvale Station) to play him in the movie, but apparently he’s a little too busy at the moment.
None of the original N.W.A. members are expected to appear in any capacity, although Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are producers on the film. The movie has been in development for years now, with previous drafts of the script written by Alan Wenkus, S. Leigh Savidge (Welcome to Death Row) and Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center). The latest version of the script was penned by Jonathan Herman (Streetnoise). Straight Outta Compton hits theatres on Aug. 14th, 2015… are you looking forward to this flick?
