Two More Directors Added to Ant-Man Shortlist

It would appear that Marvel is not having much luck finding a new director for Ant-Man after Edgar Wright’s high-profile departure from the project last month. Last we heard, Adam McKay was offered the job but was forced to turn it down due to other commitments. Now this week we are hearing that Rawson Marshall Thurber (We’re the Millers) also decided to pass on the gig. Ruben Fleischer was the other filmmaker said to be on the shortlist of candidates, but reports have surfaced indicating that he may be circling Ghostbusters 3 instead. This puts Marvel back at square one as the July start date continues to get closer. Now we’re hearing that there are two more comedy directors under consideration for this unique comic book flick. Hit the jump to find out who else they might have in mind.
According to Deadline, Marvel is now looking at both Nicolas Stoller (Neighbors, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Michael Dowse (Goon) for the director’s chair on Ant-Man. Stoller is coming off the successful Neighbors starring Zac Efron, who was recently rumoured for an unspecified Marvel role. Perhaps more importantly, Stoller already has a relationship with Disney, having co-written both of the recent Muppet movies.
As for Michael Dowse, he’s a much more surprising pick. The Canadian filmmaker is best known for the R-rated hockey comedy Goon, although his upcoming romantic comedy What If (aka The F Word) starring Daniel Radcliffe is generating positive buzz. I suppose the fight scenes in Goon prove that he has some talent for shooting action, but at this point both of these guys are clearly lacking experience when it comes to big effects-driven blockbusters. At any rate, Marvel needs to pick someone soon and it feels like they are getting to the bottom of the barrel here. What do you think about the latest potential Ant-Man helmers?
