At this point it’s becoming clear that Disney’s plan for the Star Wars franchise is to hand it off to the next generation of genre filmmakers, opting for youth and innovation over experience. Last week we learned that Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) would be directing the first in a series of Star Wars standalone films that will be released in years when there is no new installment in the ongoing Star Wars saga. Now this week they have announced that the second spin-off film will be directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle). Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had this to say about the announcement:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family… He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

Edwards’ film has a release date of Dec. 16th, 2016 but we still don’t know when Trank’s film will hit theatres. It seems likely to be at least 2017, which makes sense considering that he is currently busy with Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot, due to be released on June 19th, 2015. We also don’t know what either of these movies will be about, but rumour has it one will be about a young Han Solo while the other will be a Boba Fett film. No word on whether Zack Snyder’s rumoured Jedi samurai flick is still a thing. What do you think, will Josh Trank deliver a kick-ass Star Wars standalone movie?

Clearly they want to do to Star Wars what they are doing with the Avengers film. The same bad quality as those superhero films will also be the same…
