Monday Morning Box Office Report: Godzilla Stomps the Competition

boxofficegodzilla

Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla had a monstrous opening over the weekend, falling slightly short of the $100 million mark and coming in just behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the second best start of the year. The $93 million haul is double what Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla made back in 1998 and it’s also way more than Pacific Rim made last year ($37.3 million). The real question will be seeing how it holds up against X-Men: Days of Future Past next weekend. Elsewhere, Neighbors fell to #2 while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 dropped to third. Sadly, Disney’s Million Dollar Arm opened soft with just $10.5 million, a definite disappointment that should put a bit a damper on Jon Hamm’s transition to the big screen. The Other Woman rounded out the top 5.

1. Godzilla — $93.2M
2. Neighbors — $26M
3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 — $16.8M
4. Million Dollar Arm — $10.5M
5. The Other Woman — $6.3M
6. Heaven Is for Real — $4.4M
7. Rio 2 — $3.8M
8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier — $3.8M
9. Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return — $2M
10. Moms’ Night Out — $1.9M

Always with the puns. It must be illegal to talk about Godzilla without them.

I think it should be the other way around.

Is it just me or does Elizabeth Olsen bear a striking resemblance to Godzilla’s son? But slightly hotter.

To be fair (and I haven’t seen any other sites really mention this either), the 1998 “Godzilla” was a mid-week release. While it’s first weekend was mid-40 million-ish, it had like another 20 million going into that. While the film itself doesn’t really deserve to be defended, it’s opening weekend IS kind of being taken out of context.

I really like Jon Hamm. A shame Million Dollar Arm didn’t make more money. Hopefully it’ll have legs.

I tried to watch “Gozira” last night but I gotta be honest, I fell asleep during the final act.. :(

I ate an entire ice-cream bucket – so tired. At first I closed my one eye and said I will just think about work: sql databases, stl::c++, raw pointers.. next thing you know I woke up to the end credits ..

Really liked how they mixed real-life natural disasters with it.. loved the whole conspiracy- cover-up thing. but man, there are so many Cliché dialogs in this, horrible clunky acting, lazy exposition – godzilologist experts popping out of nowhere – …it gets so tiresome after a while. Godzilla really represents nothing in this film other than a monster that fights the spider monster..

You can forgive 1 or two of those flaws as tribute to some of the original but overall it would be hypocritical if you don’t admit that the whole thing just collapses under its own weight.

Some nice visuals, some great camera work..

Everything else is just so boring and monotonous .hate to sound like Jerry. but..
I think it’s safe to say we’ve been tricked by the trailers..

I still have not seen the Godzilla film that I hope to see. :/

We’ve been tricked? Speak for yourself, I love the movie and had lots of fun, lots and lots of fun. The Monster action was bad to the ass!!
