Alfonso Cuaron in Talks to Direct Harry Potter Spin-Off for Warner Brothers

When it was first announced last year that Warner Brothers was looking to continue the Harry Potter franchise on the big screen, I don’t think anyone was particularly surprised. After all, the previous 8 movies currently rank as the most successful film series of all time and it seems like there should be plenty of other stories to be told in that universe. The only problem is that most of the main actors have grown older and moved on in their careers… plus the actual story of Harry Potter himself has been concluded in a pretty satisfying way. Which is why Warner Brothers has been envisioning J.K. Rowling’s book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as a whole new trilogy focusing on the adventures of a wizard named Newt Scamander. J.K. Rowling is writing the script herself, and now they’ve potentially got a director that will get fans fired up as well: Alfonso Cuaron, the man who brought us one of the best Harry Potter films to date.

The news comes courtesy of Nikki Finke, formerly of Deadline, who tweeted the following earlier today:

So in other words, it’s not official yet, but it sounds pretty likely to happen. And if you ask me it’s a great idea. Not only have fans been wanting to see him return to the franchise ever since he directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but he now brings the success and technical skills he learned from Gravity with him as well. I have to admit, I was a little bit lukewarm on the idea of a spin-off trilogy, but this definitely has me a lot more interested. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theatres on Nov. 18, 2016; are you excited to see Alfonso Cuaron direct a new movie set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter?

he might be “forced” to do it to return a favor to David Heyman for helping him produce gravity.. and children of men.

YES! I so hope this happens. He did the best HP film.

I would be annoyed if he was directing another Harry Potter movie, one that would restrictive on his creative freedoms.

BUT it is a spin-off hat is merely based on the world. Granted, Alfonso can’t include (as the French put it) some much needed ménage à trois into the universe, but can still be relatively unhindered.

    Color me interested.

Having said that, isn’t it kinda weird for a director, hot after their Oscar win, to go do a movie like this?
