Universal and Legendary Set Date for Untitled Movie… Could it Be Namor?

There isn’t a whole lot of mystery left in movie marketing nowadays, so when a studio claims prime real estate on their release calendar for a big movie that hasn’t been officially announced yet, people immediately start to get curious. Earlier this week, Universal and Legendary Pictures staked out Nov. 4th, 2016 for an unknown movie that they are only referring to as “Untitled 2016 Event Project.” Obviously the implication is that this is a big blockbuster of some sort, but they aren’t yet ready to tell us what it is. Word on the street is that it is not a sequel or a remake, but it may be based on some sort of pre-existing property. A comic book movie is always the obvious possibility, but what characters do Universal and Legendary have the rights to? Would you believe… Namor: The Sub-Mariner?
According to Latino Review, a Namor movie seems like the most likely candidate for this upcoming tentpole from Universal and Legendary. Marvel’s Kevin Feige confirmed as recently as last year that Namor was still set up at Universal. Considering that Universal is really the only major studio without a big comic book movie franchise right now, it would be in their best interest to get on that boat… and also pretty unwise for them to simply let the rights lapse back to Marvel.
It’s possible that they are looking to beat Warner Brothers to the punch, as Aquaman is rumoured to be a part of their Justice League plans, and that movie won’t be out until at least 2017. Latino Review is also quick to hint at a possible connection to Zac Efron, since he is rumoured to be under consideration for a Marvel role and he just starred in Neighbors for Universal. Then again, there are a lot of people who think the “Untitled 2016 Event Project” is actually a Mass Effect movie. Would you be interested in a Namor: The Sub-Mariner solo film?
