NBC Officially Cancels Community

Community - Season 4

With Community coming ever so close to reaching series creator Dan Harmon’s original goal of “six seasons and a movie”, his dream finally came crashing down this week. NBC has officially chosen not to renew the show for a sixth season, cancelling it after years of lacklustre ratings. The show has been perpetually on the bubble pretty much since its inception, but a loud and loyal fan base has helped keep it on the air up until now. Unfortunately, after losing several cast members including Chevy Chase and Donald Glover, the end was already in sight. But is there a chance that the show might find a new home somewhere else instead?

According to Variety, Sony TV is likely to shop Community to other networks following its cancellation at NBC. The self-referential geek-centric nature of the show makes it an ideal fit for many of the new digital platforms like Netflix, Amazon or Hulu. What remains to be seen is whether or not all of the cast members want to continue doing the show.

It’s pretty clear that the return of Dan Harmon last season re-energized the show, but perhaps it was too little too late. Many of the cast members are slowly starting to build up movie careers for themselves and seem to be on their way to bigger and better things. Overall, I don’t think anyone should be surprised by this news and we should take solace in the fact that five seasons of Community even exist in the first place. Are you disappointed that Community was cancelled? Do you think we will see it continue on another network?

It sucks but it’s been a long time coming. I fully expect hulu or netflix to come to the rescue with a shortened sixth season and movie.

Disappointed it’s been cancelled (hope Netflix pick it up). Dan Harmon was expecting this based on the end credits of the season finale, which was basically a commercial for new NBC shows to replace his. Still, I’m looking forward to Thought Jacker, Intensive Karen and Mr Egypt (with BJ Novak). Not so sure what NBC are thinking with Celebrity Beat-Off and Captain Cook though – they looked really bad.

I liked the first two seasons of the show and then it went completely off the rails it seemed and I stopped watching.

Wasn’t a big fan of Season 5, and seem to be one of the few people that a.) Thought Season 4 was better and b.) thought Season 4 wasn’t that bad. Either way, still an enjoyable enough season and on the whole the best network sticom we’ve had in a long long time. Shame to see it go, but also kind of glad it didn’t get to the point of most sitcoms where they were out of ideas and the later seasons became unwatchable (looking in your direction HIMYM).

I enjoyed every episode of this series. I’m glad this show stayed on despite lackluster ratings. I enjoy shows that pander to the intellectual.

    jesus christ man

I really liked this show. Hope it will live longer with help of some other network. I want to see it end properly. I don’t want to see same shit, that happend to “Less than perfect”.

I kind of agree. Season 4 was uneven for sure, but did have some good episodes. Season 5 felt more like it had Harmon’s influence and vision back, but it still felt lacking. Losing Chase and Glover definitely hurt, Glover more so than Chase. Abed without Troy was a huge hole in the show that never got filled. In fact, I’d say the loss of Troy in relation to the group just made the show feel like lacking. Although I’m curious how a rewatch of seasons 4 and 5 will go in changing my opinion.

  • I’ll agree that season 5 was a bit bumpy in places, but when you factor in that it lost two core characters, added a new main character, and had a complete shift in format (Jeff being a teacher, the Save Greendale Committee, etc.), I think it held together remarkably well.
Season 4 had one or two strong episodes, but some really, really weak ones. Anything to do with the Troy/Britta relationship is so badly fumbled that I completely forgot about it until someone brought it up. Not to mention the whole “Changnesia” sideplot that goes nowhere.
Then again, season 4 does set up for the “gas-leak year” joke, so there’s that.

Jeff was a teacher? Oh yeah, I almost forgot about that since aside from that one episode we never fucking saw him teach.

  • Alright, fair point.
