HBO to Resurrect Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Project Greenlight

Although it seems highly unlikely that there is any truth to the rumours that Matt Damon will play Aquaman in the upcoming Justice League movie, we do know at least one project that he will be taking on with his buddy Ben Affleck in the near future. That would be a new season of Project Greenlight, the documentary / reality series that they spearheaded back in 2001 to help young filmmakers compete for a chance to direct a feature film. The show aired for two seasons on HBO before moving to Bravo in 2005, but it was never renewed for a fourth season — until now, that is. HBO announced this week that they will be bringing back the show for a new season with the help of Affleck, Damon and Miramax Films. Ben Affleck had this to say:

Project Greenlight was ahead of its time… Now that technology has caught up to the concept, we thought it was a perfect time to bring it back. A whole new generation of filmmakers has grown up sharing everything, and the next big director could be just an upload away. It is really great having Project Greenlight back at HBO.”

Matt Damon went on to list off several Project Greenlight alumni who have gone on to have successful careers in Hollywood including Pete Jones, John Gulager, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. Surprisingly, he failed to mention one of the show’s biggest success stories, Shia LaBeouf, although he did have an acting career prior to starring in The Battle of Shaker Heights. No word yet on when the new season will air, but I for one am excited. Now if we could just get Fox to bring back On The Lot as well… preferably with Michael Bay hosting.
