After concluding one of the most unique trilogies ever made with Before Midnight, Richard Linklater returns once again this year with another groundbreaking film that presents the experience of growing up by watching actors literally age before our eyes on screen. Unlike the Before trilogy, this isn’t three separate films shot a decade apart; instead, Boyhood is one single film that was shot in installments over a 12 year period with the same cast. You probably don’t need to know much more than that, but the movie also stars Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke along with Linklater’s own daughter Lorelei Linklater and relative unknown Ellar Coltrane (whose breakout performance has clearly been a long time coming).
