New Friday the 13th TV Series in the Works

Earlier this month, we learned that a new Friday the 13th movie was finally being set up at Paramount with director David Bruckner (V/H/S) at the helm. This is being seen as another reboot to the series, although what that means is still anyone’s guess. As the next movie is taking shape, however, it appears that the director of the original 1980 film is planning to bring Jason Voorhees to the small screen instead. Sean S. Cunningham is reportedly in the process of setting up a new Friday the 13th TV series, although unlike the previous Friday the 13th series, Jason will actually be central to the show. In fact, the story “re-imagines Jason in multiple time periods” and takes place in Crystal Lake where “new secrets about his wacky family are revealed.” Here is what Cunningham had to say about the project:
“Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide… Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we’re confident will not only excite existing fans of Friday The 13th but also attract new audiences to the situations and characters that inhabit the small town of Crystal Lake.”
Clearly it seems to be following in the footsteps of shows like Hannibal and Bates Motel, which both delve into the back story of well-known horror icons. No network is attached as of yet, and to be honest, I’m not entirely sure how Cunningham’s Crystal Lake Entertainment even has the rights to use the character of Jason Voorhees on TV. Bill Basso (Terminator) and Jordu Schell (Avatar) will write the script while Roy Knyrim (Gods And Monsters) of SOTA FX will handle the special effects. What do you think, are you game for a new Friday the 13th TV show?
